Story: Spam clampdown starts to win victories
John Doherty -- you should be aware that the From: header in an e-mail can be completely falsified. Most spam is now sent via virus-infested home computers; the spammers have entire networks of theses computers and a control system for commanding them.
None of these home computers are yahoo, hotmail, aol, or (most famously now that criminals have discovered how easy it is to get e-bay customers to tell them sensitive accounting information) ebay, but they emit lots of mail claiming to be from these sources. I have seen exactly two real spams come from hotmail and aol servers, and hotmail tech support responded by closing the account of the spammer (aol appears never to respond to complaints by nonsubscribers, but seems to be doing SOMETHING based on the low numbers of spam I'm seeing from their network..
