Story: Do senders have a right to your inbox?
Won't the tracking get a hit immediately if the recipient has autopreview on? Therefore, the data collected will be meaningless - to avoid the social glitch, simply say, "Oh I wasn't at my computer today, it will have been autoprevied though.". Its a bit like people who leave their IM client logged in even though they're asleep. Just because it says they are online, doesn't mean they are sitting there ready to respond.
Also, I'm not sure of this, but if you go to internet options and tell IE not to show pictures, then html email pictures are also not retrieved. This seems to be the case with outlook express.
