Story: UK military bans iPods from HQs
You can run most versions of Linux directly from a usb device now. This in turn gives you access to the hard drive. Some limit to read only. But this still does get you straight into the data on the hard drive. All you need to do is set the bios to allow booting from USB and plug in a usb enabled harddrive/cd-rom. Knoppix is just one example of a Linux OS that can do this, even off a 128 meg memory stick.
