Story: IT contractor wins key IR35 battle
Repeal this ill-conceived regulation:
Perhaps now the government will repeal IR35, this ill-conceived and very poorly drafted regulation. IR35 seems to have been prompted by the misplaced greed and envy of people who have very little understanding of business or industry.
IR35 has had no beneficial effects but has diverted thousands of hours of creative talent which would have been much better applied to helping British industry.
The fact that the UK Treasury has continually refused to reveal either the cost of enforcing IR35 or the amount of (any) extra tax raised can lead to only one conclusion.
Until the government actually understands the workings of business and industry, it should be very cautious at introducing any regulations which so greatly distort business relationships.
The flexibility of the UK economy has always been its great strength. Freelance workers have provided an important part of this flexibility. Regulations such as IR35 restrict this flexibility.
We now see the continuing loss of UK jobs as they are transferred to more flexible overseas countries.
