Story: Telstra 'played Linux card' to lower Microsoft bills
Life cycly cost are often overlooked by those decision makers who "have moved on" by the time newer (or more, or less) product versions need to be deployed.
Meaning that you have to be a very high profile case for any commercial vendor to even be considered for such a huge discount that the vendor in question will actually loose money on the deal itself and the years thereafter.
In other words, those huge Microsoft discounts are more then likely to be "small temporary setbacks" for them. And don't be surprised if such deals are littered with fine prints that spell strings attached all over the place.
