I'll believe that Sun can out-engineer anything when they start out-engineering Fujitsu in the Sparc space. Sun is primarily a hardware company with a small software division that pushes Java like it's the only game in town (regardless that Sun primarily uses C++ in-house for most of their products; so much for eating your own dog food). That reminds me of another company whose core competenceny seems to be marketing but they have a small marketing division that makes "good enough" products. Regardless of the comparisons, Sun is dead wrong on a number of fronts:

1) Linux is a kernel. SuSe, MandrakeLinux, Linspire, and a few others will probably stridently argue that Linux does not equal Red Hat.

2) Sun's leaders may still have a lot of fight, but the last series of Sun servers I was involved with had their CPUs die within the first 30 days. So much for quality or out-engineering anything.

3) Any partnership will Microsoft will come back to haunt Sun. Just ask Sybase or anyone else who's "partnered" with Microsoft.
