The police and the FCC should definitely be taking action on this, and legislators and the judiciary should be backing them up on this.

I totally agree that we need to stop pussy-footing around on this issue.

We need to stop pussy-footing around on this issue.

PC and the internet are consumer products -- if they are not easy for consumers to use, that is their makers fault.

That is what we do with TVs, radios, blenders, children's clothing, cars, aircraft -- if the vendor's product or service isn't safe, on our behalf governments force vendors to make the product safe by establishing mandatory standards and enforcing them through testing.

We have standards on wired communications devices, we have standards on every other type of communiciations device -- why not on the devices that have the greatest potential to disrupt society.

Send the cops after the blackhat hackers and virus writers. And have them actually put behind bars for 3 months to 3 years (depending on what they did).

Send the FCC after insecure product vendors and ISPs, including those people who are ISPs by virtue of providing insecure wireless hotspots.

As for cops having better things to do with their times, blackhat hacking at its mildest is: theft, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, and harrassment.

At its strongest, blackhat hacking is terrorism, espionage, and treason.
