"IM runs over port 80, which is often regarded as a trusted port because Internet traffic travels through it." It's regarded as a trusted port because WEB traffic uses it. "Internet traffic" would be all traffic on the Internet including e-mail traffic, FTP, etc.

"If instructed, the nmap bot is capable of a DoS attack by sending a massive amount of pings, a term hackers have dubbed 'the ping of death'." This is not the ping of death. The ping of death is a specially crafted ping packet that exceeds the maximum legal length. See http://www.insecure.org/sploits/ping-o-death.html The term that the author is probably looking for is known as ping flooding.
