With everyone it seems predicting the extinction of PDA's can anybody recommend a viable alternative for carrying or accessing sizeable amount of data in a mobile form other than a laptop?

I need something that can have software e.g. word and other applications on it as well as access to the internet and it seems the only contender for this is laptops.

Anyone got any ideas?
