Here's an example on why you should base your business on open systems:

A friend of mine used to use a proprietary accounting system to run his business on.
It's a good one, and he happily use it for years.

One day, he hit the limits of the software, and decided to upgrade.

To his horror, his software is so old, the vendor no longer support it. The new one is radically different now. And to top it off, he's having problems exporting his business data from the old software.

The last thing you need when you're running a business is to have it disrupted massively like this. With open software, this scenario is not going to happen.
