While the comparison is nice I think it's misleading. The most an open source developer is likely to lose is time. Our lifeboatmen and women risk life and limb in terrible weather.
The comparison understates the huge gift these people and other similar groups like cave rescue and mountain rescue provide to society, particularly the UK where the government has yet to be shamed into providing a state lifeboat service.
