Story: Broadband TV could spark tighter Web controls
It strikes me as odd if not very worrying that the TV regulator should be so concerned about what people might be able to access via the Internet. It is after all, the ONLY free speech platform available to the masses. Is the regulator worried we may CHOOSE to view material WE DEEM fit to view without their nanny interference? It seems the only explanation to fit their concerns. As is typical, their excuse is that children may have access to material, which is unsuitable for them. Unless children are given credit cards in the foreseeable future, it is very unlikely they will be able to access anything intended for adults. After all, broadband on demand video will no doubt be a commercial enterprise and hence no different to obtaining 'proof of age' access to adult sites today.
For all its unregulated status, the Internet has not brought about the social meltdown our nanny censors fear will happen if they are removed from the face of the earth. Their arguments are weaker than ever and I hope they all disappear into the black hole of their own distorted imaginations and archaic rhetoric.
