Something killed my machine - not sure if it was picasa

I have been using Picasa at work for a while with no problems. I got a new monitor for my home machine and installed the Google toolkit, including picasa 2 and the anit virus. Picasa went through my HD looking for photos and then the Virus scan took place afterwards. I went out, and when I got back my computer had frozen. On re-boot it would no longer boot into Windows. I've just spent this evening reloading windows, which was on a partition of it's own separate from my work. Now I've started checking the partition with the work and it seems riddled with errors. Could this be due to heavy load put on the disk indexing?

I'm not sure if this post means anything to anyone, but I guess I should reinforce the backup advice - I failed to do so and now I'm paying for it.
