We took a similar approach in shifting people from Win98se to RedHat 8/9 and StarOffice6/Openoffice1.1.3+
You can make the transition easier by letting tech savy early adopters in the department try it out, letting everyone dual boot the system and/or use a X on windows to a remote application server.
