Mesh networks are deployed across the planet already. In fact, last week at the UK DTI ABC Summit http://www.abcampaign.org.uk, we heard Richard Lander of LocustWorld report that there are over 11,000 MeshBoxes deployed world wide. Self-healing networks with optimum security are 'rife' and it is inaccurate to imply that there are only a few mesh networks in large cities. They proliferate in rural areas and areas of incumbent failure, and offer solutions created for and by grassroots' activitists as well as large scale corporate and academic environments. Intel ain't the first by a long chalk - there are small hamlets, campuses, business parks, etc in deepest England, US, Caribbean, Far East and beyond who already have more than this article is reporting
