Story: Yankee Group slams 'Linux extremists'
RE: TCO for an x86 system...
The hardware ramifications with x86 systems are in fact the same regardless of what OS is on them.
Not all Linux distros are free, eg. Redhat and Linspire charge fees for their OSes.
True that scrpting can cost more money in areas of hiring/training and with profit loss. However, that is why there is such a thing as upgrade plans. Any company can save thousands by switching to open source provided they have enough foresight to plan the switch out in easy to manage steps.
However, the majority of Linux is free including some really great distributions. E.G., Ubuntu, LAMPPIX, Libranet, etc. (No licensing fees, which my dear Watson, figures into TCO).
Furthermore, many older machines can be renewed with the right Linux distro... E.G., a Boston Liberal Arts college for Native Americans reused their 45 lab computers with memory upgrades and Knoppix Linux. Thus they were able to acquire 45 new OS-free computers from Walmart, and load Windows 98 on these machines. Which is perfectly legal under the 1998 Win98 EULA. So, for their TCO, they were able to get new computers for a discount because they didn't have Windows XP on them. Not only that, but by purchasing more memory, and some blank CD-Rs they were able to get Knoppix Linux on their older x86 machines. Now this college has 90 lab computers, and they saved on their TCO by not upgrading to Windows XP.... Which works fine at a Liberal Arts college.
Overall, to quell the arguments here the TCO for running Linux DEPENDS on which distribution you are using. Just like how my wife shops, if you aren't going to shop around for a better deal. Then you shouldn't worry about TCO. Howevert, there is always a way to save money on running any type of a network.
