Story: 'Basic' tabbed browsing to come in IE7

well, of course, it would. that's the whole point. M$ are in business to make money, not to aid the competition. If they can nick "customers" from other software producers, then they'll do whatever it takes.

Firefox is not just a threat to IE but to M$ at large because it's a potential software platform in its own right. Why by other M$ software when everything can be done through the browser. is it any wonder then that IE7 will replicate some of FF's functionality in order to stave off its rival's evolution and market take-up.
