hello rupert,

How does open source work ? Are there common standards, connectivity and integration between program's form different 'vendors'. In other words. I want to check out linux but hold back for different reasons. Witch linux edition should I buy, will other program's work with it, witch program's will that be, what if it breaks down, where do i find information on how to fix bugs, who can i turn to I know i can hold acountable for fixing stuff...
You know i've been fed up with windows a lot but i don't plan studiing unix to install linux. I want software (hardware also) to work as a piece of electronics (radio, tv-set, mp3 player). Push play, 'play'. Push stop, 'stop'.
I want software to be written so that I can't crash it. Such would be a simple joy, but actually to difficult for Ph'd IT'rs. Or not !?!
