Who says the cost of software is high?, generally pirates would probably pirate Word if it cost a quid. What exactly is high cost?. Is a city broker paying £100-£200 for Word when he makes millions each day. Is buying a PC for £1000 and then spending £200 to get Microsoft Office really so expensive. I strongly suspect anything other than 'free'/stolen is too expensive for some people
As for monopolies some things naturally just tend towards that. There simply isnt room on the market for 10 different types of word processor (in the same way there isnt room for building 2 sets of railtracks between 2 cities). There are no rules saying Microsoft will be top of the pack for ever but I can 100% guarantee if it falls it will only be replaced by another corperate monopoly.
