If MS are going to start doing this then it is safe to predict that they have a future view of verifying the validity of the OS for _all_ updates when Windows Vista gets released. This could well be what the Linux community have been waiting for. No doubt, the people who really don't want to pay for a copy of an overpriced operating system will glance around for cheaper alternatives. Linux and other free or cheaper operating systems will no doubt catch their eye. Of course, the Linux community should not count their chickens because windows users - no matter how annoyed with having to pay for windows - will have a daunting learning curve to endure if they want to save money and take advantage of Linux. Personally, i hope they are willing to make the jump.
