For every popular piece of proprietary software out there, there's at least one viable open-source alternative available, often more, that either costs much less or is free. Someone also mentioned that "OS" (which I assume they mean Open Source and not Operating System) costs more than an Microsoft suite. Ummmm...no? OpenOffice=Free. Any competitor to Microsoft must sell their software for less than Microsoft or no one will be willing to buy it.

Its the applications and device drivers that run on windows that cement its dominance. How many people would fork out hundreds of pounds for Vista if Linux ran all the software and kit they wanted to use.
