There is free software. No question about that. Look at Acrobat Reader for example that most people are familiair with. There's tons more of quality free stuff out there. And just as is the case with Acrobat Reader as long as you can help yourself it's a whole lot less cash then when you have to pay someone to fix it for you. But even then still a whole lot less then having to pay someone to make it work, keep it working and paying for the licenses too.
