40 years on and Plain Text e-mail still hasn't been beat.

As for digital signing and all. That won't stop "hidden text" from arriving where it shouldn't. That has more to do with the choice of word processing product and how you go about it.

As for DRM and such in general. Since the commercial self interest significantly outways the public/private functionality it might offer it's bound to promise a lot and deliver little (apart from headaches, that is).

Maybe companies should look more into making sure that electronic documents never need to leave the internal network by means of sophisticated and secure remote viewing. That wouldn't be 100% perfect either (certainly not as things are today) but it would allow for more safe keeping, (quality) control and tracking that's less subject to privacy concerns.
