With the upcoming various Microsoft releases for the next coming years .Net equals .Not given additional extra work and investments needed to make everything still work.
MONO is the better choice in that regard but alternatives like Java, XML and such are better given that they're less subject to changes in other parts of the equation (=the different technical solution parts within a given business process).
In short: domino effect.
Answer: work your way into flexible Web Based Portal (total) solutions.
Still required: various true open industry Web standards.
