Because it will cost less than your 24Mbps and it will be available anywhere in the region, not just in your house!
You need to consider what happens when various devices are kitted out with this technology, and they will be if it lives up to 10% of the hype.
Low power, high range...it will be in iPods, mobile devices (e.g. PSP-type), cars, fridges, tvs.
It could maybe even be thought of as Wide Area Bluetooth...
