What is so fantastic about this?
A simple link analysis for this path shows a total path loss of around 120dB for a line of sight path. Given the transmit power, antenna gains (14dB I believe) and bandwidth a conventional system would have a margin approaching 15dB - you could do this with binary FM!
Cellular systems operate at the power they do to maintain link margin in city strets with buildings in the way, multipath fading in a mobile environment, etc
