Story: Skype and Google fund 'illegal' Wi-Fi start-up
Why does big business seem to be innovation's worst enemy?
They claim to champion it, but I haven't seen Microsoft come up with any revolutionary new ideas since the early 90s. Many people say BT helped cause the dot.com crash by deliberatly restrictng broadband availability. And Intel's "new" chips always seem to share virtually all design principles with models over a decade old.
Rather, it is nearly always the startups who produce the real innovation. Google, Macromedia Flash, Napster, Netscape, etc. virtually all the really "cool" new concepts come from new companies / individuals willing to risk everything on a brand new concept rather than maintaining a year-on-year profit baseline.
In this case as with all the others, existing big business should not be allowed to muscle in on the situation and attempt to erase any invention (and it's resultant benefit to society) just for their own greedy purposes.
