Story: O2 seeks 2G solution to rural 3G

Why not use EDGE technology? For a relatively cheap and easy upgrade to existing base transmitters, the benefits offered by 3G can be available quickly and effectively. Saves all the expense of new transmitters (and the associated safety arguments) and allows everyone to keep their existing handsets or upgrade to 2.5G models that are already available.
The equipment manufacturers already have the transmitter upgrade units designed and tested - just waiting to be used by the operators.
Cheap, simple, quick, effective.
What are we waiting for?
