Story: Gates mocks $100 laptop
The '$100 laptop', as I understand it, is targeted significantly towards the developing world; indeed, I can't think it would find much success in developed countries, given it's limitations and the provision of relatively cheap public Internet access there. Therefore, assuming Mr. Gates is aware of this, I'm very disappointed in him. The provisioning of a cheap laptop would be of considerable help in developing countries; there has already been a positive impact with the provisioning of cheap mobile telephones in such places. Telling poor people to go out and get a 'decent' set-up is like telling an average person, complaining about bening stuck in traffic jams, to simply go out and buy a helicopter.
