Story: Google Base to transform e-tailing?

Google Base's retail aspirations are especially interesting, because it has the potential to bring together two sectors of the online services industry that are currently entirely separate. In one fell swoop it takes on price comparison sites like Kelkoo and Pricerunner, and online storefront solutions like eBay Shops, Yahoo! Stores and Amazon Marketplace.

The question is whether Google can pull this off. One of the key issues will be useability, and here the flexibility of Google Base may be against it. In trying to be a 'one size fits all' solution to delivering structured content online, it has so far ended up being very clunky and pretty difficult to use.

I wonder, who needs .asia domain? I cannot imagine, what would be useful for Microsoft.asia? Toyota.asia? Then let's register .europe (if .eu is too short). Or perhaps Microsoft.southamerica, Dell.australiaandnewzealand, Coca-Cola.africa... Sound funny? Then why not just use the global and country domains? Or perhaps it is time to drop the domains at all?
