Story: The dangers of choice

There is a classic experiment where hungry gerbils are put in a cage with more and more sunflower seeds. Up to a point the number of seeds they eat in ten minutes rises as more seeds are available. However, there comes a point where the number of choices of seed to go to confuses them and they begin to eat less even though there are more seeds.

I guess this is the IT/human version of this!

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
