Concerned about getting the right config- not about licence check

I think too much attention is being paid to license checks since how do we get better software if someone is not paying for it? We might even pay less if illegal copies were not made. What concerns me more is "What other liberties are Microsoft and others taking when doing a license check?" In terms of graphics, I found a site which explains what I need without all the jargon: www.vista-graphics.info I just want my system to run:)
