How do you work out what video card is in a computer without taking it apart? By examining the PCI bus, of course. Once you have booted into Linux, all you need is:
# lspci -vvv
You will then be told more than you ever wanted to know about the PC's PCI devices, and you just hunt for the Video device.
#lspci -vvvn
gives you the PCI numbers instead of the translated names.
Personally, I'm amazed you tried to migrate from Ubuntu to WinXP at all. My own parents made the leap from Windows to Fedore Core without missing a beat. Mind you, I had prepared them by installing Mozilla on Windows for them first.
