Story: Cost blamed for gloomy global 3G outlook
Flat-rate unlimited 2G (GPRS) and 3G (UMTS) are already reality in the Netherlands and I see huge potential for it. Teleworking (e.g., by means of putting a 2G/3G device into a laptop), IM, VoIP, traffic and other forms of location specific info, RSS, remote (security) camera viewing, internet browsing, almost instant e-mail delivery, mobile remote support (even medical emergency assistance), large area field bus, national environmental monitoring, resource tracking and so forth. Cost savings and additional potential revenues all around. The only problem really is that there's no international flat-rate. Once that's reality the concept of anywhere, any place and with any device without getting ripped off is that much closer. Certainly when combined with full and non vendor specific web based services.
Gee, I wonder how the mobile telecom world today would have looked like without so much competition. Not a month can go by or a better offer is available somewhere. Well, in the Netherlands at least.
