Looking 5 years into the future, Microsoft need to open their source and offer the basic operating system free. This will keep them ahead of the combined effect of Linux, Mac OS X and Google.

With the OS free, there is no piracy. And by giving it away, they get the people back on their side. The people who have been turning against them for quite some time now and who will be running away from Vista - or wish they could run away from it, anyway...
