Story: Operators blame roaming charges on handset subsidies

Price gouging and secrecy

On the one hand, many operators may be loathe to offer up their data, as it would give competitors a chance to peer into their cost models, and do damage in the marketplace in perhaps specific niches that might otherwise remain safe.

On the other hand, I am fairly certain that businesses charge "what the market will bear", which, in laymans terms, is "gouging".

I feel there is no real alternative, than to have a European regulator, which forces all operators to behave according to a code of conduct, and a pricing model, which is consistent, from country to country. A regulator with the power to apply significant fines for non compliance.

I haveheard, as have many, of the horror stories of various people heading over to different parts of Europe, only to come back with an enormous bill for roaming calls or data. We need to get to a point where there is a fixed cost, and a fair use policy. This will truly set the industry free. Until then there will be limited take up in the roaming space. See fixed broadband for how the industry SHOULD operate.
