Story: Novell linked to 'Windows cheaper than Linux' statement
Novell's confusing messaging
I think the confusing thing about Novell's current strategy is that they are giving out some seriously mixed messaging – extolling the importance of cooperation with Microsoft in areas such as virtualisation (which makes sense) but also claiming that they are happy that Vista seems to be flopping.
Hoping that Vista will fail in one breath and then putting out a joint press release with Microsoft in which a customer claims that Linux has a higher TCO than Windows is a dangerous and confusing game. IBM has managed get away with a certain amount of flip-flopping around Linux while supporting Windows but Novell's relationship with Microsoft is far more divisive.
We'll have to wait and see how much this deal with Microsoft has really cost Novell and what it will mean for its future and the future of Linux.
