Again it all depends who you speak to.

I suggest a period in purgatory (or BBC4) for those who presuppose their education is the be all and end all of the rules on grammar. Julian Fellows for one would disagree with you both.

The last advice I was given (from English Professor) was "just don't bother with the apostrophe at all".

Grammar is a very moveable feast and my bottom line is that the sentence should make sense to the reader.
