Story: Ofcom: No public funding for 21CN competitors
no public funding?
A late response but...
"What level of coverage do we have for broadband now? 99.6 percent! How much public money was necessary to do that? Zero! "
Erm.. plenty of public money was thrown at BT in order to get them to enable exchanges that otherwise wouldn't be economic.
One example i know of is where BT received £800,000 of public money to enable some exchanges, ironically the RDA had the option of spending £10000 on a wireless (not wifi) infrastructure system to do the same task but BT is not viewed as a "private company" sadly , more a public utility where state aid rules do not seem to apply.
the people of Scotland threw millions at BT to get most of scotlands exchanges enabled so this statement is equally mute there.
