interoperability issues

Since Microsoft has a stranglehold on PC's OS, it is no wonder that lack of knowledge, of open source, is high on list of companies. But,
I have to think that Microsoft's ability to control the interoperability
has a lot to do with that lack of knowledge. Case in point: I recently bought a new motherboard and processor. I have an old copy of XP Pro, from 2002, has no SP1, or SP2, and the motherboard blocked the installation. I was forced to buy another copy of XP with SP1 & SP2.
I find it hard to believe the mobo manufacturer came up with this on his own. My money, but I can't install my choice of software.
