Tesla invented AC power and Westinghouse built the original AC generator plant at Niagra Falls. His tests showed that the Niagra Falls plant alone could broadcast power for public use worldwide. At that time, the U.S. copper industry lobbied for rural electrification by a wired power distribution network. Tesla's plans were rejected as not profitable by his financier, J P Morgan. Tesla's patents were given to his friend George Westinghouse, who was then in financial trouble. Tesla eventually died in poverty.
