Meanwhile your business collapses around your ears

All good advice but it presuposes that network administrators have plenty of spare time on their hands to deal with the important rather than juggle with the myriad of urgent tasks that get in the way of best intentions. The reality is that DDoS is regarded as a low risk and therefore low priority by many organisations until the day their Web sites fall over or their critical users can't access their applications. The problem then becomes a fire fighting operation with serious financial implications for the business, which is usually the motive behind the attack in the first place. The choice is then to either pay up on the ransom demands or find an off the shelf solution to mitigate the attack as quickly as possible. Fortunately solutions do exist which are capable of recognizing and fitering DDoS traffic from good users to ensure that normal business functions can continue whilst the attack is being dealt with.
