Microsoft and Cisco: Cosy competitors

Ballmer has said the obvious professionally - "Some people like to see things in black or white, we're either partners or competitors... We have to work together in a sophisticated fashion to give customers what they want."

We are now in a very competitive and aggressive industry era, defined by increasing industry convergence (nutriceuticals, cosmoneuticals and the likes).
A genuinely customer-oriented company focuses more on customer developments in formulating its strategies. Companies can and have certainly lost it in dog-eat-dog situation; rather than formulating and executing a consistent, customer-oriented strategy they determine their moves based on competitors' moves - they do not move towards their own goals, and don't know where they/battle will end up!

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
