Story: Man arrested over wireless 'piggybacking'
Open WiFi
I choose to share some of my fixed Internet connection to any passing visitors/mobile users via an open WiFi access point which is set to use some of my bandwidth and is isolated/firewalled off from my home network.
Will police now be questioning anyone in the vicinity who is using WiFi (PDA, phone, Laptop ) just in case they are accessing without my permission ?
People need to be educated in securing their systems, and making a decision as to whether they share some of their connection (I believe some ISPs prohibit sharing under their T&Cs) . ISPs and equipment manfactures need to have max security on by default and for their customers to then easily and simply chose the appropriate access/security they wish.
As previously said, the police should have much more serios crimes to combat, and then they can collar the computer ciminals who are deliberately accessing/attacking other people's computer systems (hacking) and causing damage/denial-of-service. They should not be interested in who is using widely available WiFi Internet access unless it is being used to commit a crime. Everyone welcome the availability of roaming WiFi Internet access over secured access ponts - this has to become the norm. http://www.fon.com
