Backups will they ever learn!

I installed leopard on my intel mac mini, I did an upgrade, but before that I backed up all data, just incase! ( after using windows for a number of years it pays to back up)
as it started to install the screen went blank no monitor signal, left it for 5 mins, then system restarted and, after a 30 sec delay on blue screen, it booted into leopard No problem, all my data was still there, its running fast!

They only thing that I find odd is the time machine, after the first back up on activation, which took a large chunk of my 80GB backup drive, its been backing up every 2 hours or so, I have been watching the hard disk space slowly go down, Who much does it need? How big a drive do we need for it? at this rate no size would do!
