Story: Google's Android paves way for mobile supremacy
The Cell Phone Three Horse Race - Google vs. Symbian vs. MS Mobile
There is no doubt that the move into the mobile environment via an OS was a good move by Google. Naturally the open-source nature of Android presents a unique flavor of potential mobile security vulnerabilities, but nonetheless this is a good thing.
Many are calling the introduction of Android the “Three Horse Race” as the Symbian and Microsoft Mobile platforms have received a legitimate challenger. Naturally we are at the beginning stages of an industry revitalization. I look for even more innovation and entrants into the mobile OS industry to occur before a true long term market share will be solidified. The mobile OS landscape is still relatively new and while Symbian and Microsoft Mobile are incumbents no true long term leadership has been declared.
As the founder of MyMobiSafe.com, I can legitimately declare that each OS has its pros and cons. The greatest issue that I see as a consumer concern is across all platforms is mobile security. Android has been introduced as an open-source platform, which will carry its own price of mobile security. As for Symbian and Microsoft Mobile, the hacker community continues to uncover potential vulnerabilities. It goes without saying that this surge of competition (the three horse race :p) is bound to stir up hacker interest across all platforms. The important thing to highlight is the growing necessity of mobile security solutions in the changing environment of mobile. The days of the “safe phone” have come and gone; essentially every mobile handset has its share of security vulnerabilities today. The advantages of mobile security providers continually monitoring and responding to threats is increasingly evident in this changing mobile environment.
