Story: Konquering the desktop with KDE
KDE doesn't have any desktop icons.
This is the way I prefer it, a nice ,clean, icon free desktop. As far as not booting into a graphical environment, there are few that don't. Plus you can always add KDE during the install. When selecting software you can add, or during the bootloader install you can add. Or, after the install it is very simple to change to KDE.
