Green software

In Jonathan Steel's presentation there is no mention of green software. Efficient code like Linux that uses less hardware resource to do do the same work as say Windows is greener. It requires less powerful hardware, meaning less energy consumption, and means scrapping hardware less often. Even then the old hardware can be recycled as thin clients or Linux powered desktops.
The thin client architecture is also green - a thin client may consume a little as 7 watts vs 70 - 90 watts of a fat client. Fat clients earn more licence fees for proprietary software companies so they are less inclined to recommend thin clients than the FLOSS solution providers.
