Story: China shuts down 'real-time' porn site
Is freedom from censorship more precious than life?
I am glad to see that the front page of The Times: "Scramble to curb suicide websites", Saturday 26 January, shares the views expressed at the start of this discussion, "Shutting down undesirable websites".
Let us bring some balance into the argument. OK, there will be governments who use censorship to muzzle free speech, but please remember there are those who regard incitement to racial and religious hatred as "free speech". So there is the question of degree: how free should speech be? Should everyone have the right to incite murder and suicide? I don't think so.
The Times article goes on to say that ten leading ISPs have been approached, but claim "there is nothing [we] can do unless a site is shown to be breaking the law. The problem is that the law is inadequate." My own belief is that if ISPs were more concerned with their responsibilities than making money out of us they could sort this out very swiftly.
Over to you, Gordon.
