Apple price cuts

There is always this big thing about Apple cutting their price shortly after product launches. With the iPhone the media is saying that this is due to poor sales figures, but I seem to remember them doing this on a number of the products.

Surely it makes good business sense to keep prices high at launch to take advantage of the increase demand and limited supply. As supply increases and demand drops off, then the price is lowered.
